Portion of a letter handwritten/signed by Eugene Kelly, stating to the recipient that he was getting out of the dry goods business to go into the banking business in San Francisco. Dated 1859. Note: Eugene Kelly (1808 - 1894) was an Irish-American merchant, banker and philanthropist who moved to San Francisco in 1849 at the beginning of the CA gold rush. After 10 years as a dry goods merchant, he help found banking houses in both San Francisco and New York as well as other banking and railroad establishments throughout the US. Amongst his numerous charitable endeavors were the National Academy of Design, the Catholic University of America, and oversight of the construction of the Statue of Liberty.
