A railroad connecting Eureka and the Colorado River? Is it s joke? Is it a scam? No and just ask the Denver and Rio Grande! In 1881 this Rail Road company began selling stock to the people of Eureka. A trunk line to a major road would make their life better and their producing mines more profitable. The Denver & Rio Grande must have thought so, because in 1881 they purchased the line for $50.000 with the expected destination to connect to their main line somewhere near Iron Mountain in Utah. So this was no joke. The Eureka Sentinel reported that the superintendent "asserted" that 30 miles of track will be in operation by Christmas. Currently there are two gangs of men working and that force will be increased from day-to-day. So it was not a scam. But it was also not a good investment as it dried up in the Nevada desert.
