Looking to buy a house in San Francisco in 1862? Pay off the lot $10 a month until you own it. Issued to Ellery and singed by B Congdon. California allegorical vignette. Towne & Bacon printers. Blue on white. Number 61. This was for the fourth payment in November of 1862. In the 1860s investors formed about 170 different homestead associations in San Francisco. Association officers purchased large tracts of land with investor capital and sold “membership shares” to working men or women for a small down payment and monthly installments. Once purchasers paid the share in full, they received title to a building lot in the tract. The Eureka Association was located between Douglas and Noe and 17th and 20th. Today this area is a quaint San Francisco neighborhood.
