Gold Rush era. Panama, N.G. (New Granada). August 3rd, 1852. Letter written on blue letterhead to Arthur McArthur Jr. in Livingston, Maine. Discusses the Bark "Emily" having put into Santiago for water and provisions but was not heard of arriving yet in San Francisco. Also mentions steamers Ohio and Sea Bird. The SS Ohio was owned by George Law of US Mail Steamship Co. which also owned the Central America. Ohio sailed between New York, New Orleans and Latin America. Letter is signed by WC Ralston, a key financial figure in California and Nevada. Ralston was the founder of the Bank of California which was the financial giant that financed the V&T Railroad and numerous mining and milling operations on the Comstock Lode. This letter shows that this California based bank had established a presence in Panama for traveler crossing the Isthmus of Panama to head to the California Gold Rush. The reverse is stamped Steamship 20 (20 cents paid thru a private mail system). 9 x 11" Folds.
