Extremely rare. Very difficult to find 1860s stocks from the main portion of the Comstock Lode. The Exchequer was located on the "gut" of the Comstock in Gold Hill next to the Yellow Jacket. Stock Certificate No. 256 for 100 shares made out to A.C. Hill, Trustee dated October 20, 1865. The Company was capitalized at $2,400,000, 8000 shares at $300 each and incorporated on July 19th, 1865. An embossed company seal is centered at the bottom. Signatures include Wm. Hillis, Secretary and S. Heydenfeldt, President. Black and white with a vignette of woman at left. Lith. Britton & Co. S.F. Not cancelled. Rare early territorial with foot ownership per share. Curiously this is one of the mines left out by Couch & Carpenter. From the Pacific Coast Annual Mining Review and Stock Ledger October 1878, p.195: “The Exchequer lies next south of the Bullion and between it and the Alpha in Gold Hill. It has been prospected through the Bullion and Imperial shafts. Explorations down to the 1700, 1800, and 2000 ft. levels crosscuts have shown only low-grade ore. Number of feet is 400. Shares per foot is 250.” In late 1878. some 13 years after this certificate was issued, there were 100,000 shares and the assessments (12) had added up to $380,000. The mine is listed in Becker’s Geology of the Comstock Lode and Washoe District 1882 on p. 410. Solomon Heydenfeldt is listed in Langley’s Business Directory of San Francisco for 1866, p.225 and is a well-known attorney, judge and investor that is either an officer or trustee of many mining companies.
