Exploration of the Valley of the Amazon made under direction of the Navy Department by William Lewis Herndon and Lardner Gibbon in two volumes. Third volume is a map volume. This important three volume set was Captain Herndon's most important work of his life. Herndon is unfortunately best known as the captain of the ill-fated gold treasure ship - the SS Central America, which sank off the coast of Virginia in 1857 with great loss of life and more than $3 million in gold cargo. This work has important illustrations of the Amazon, Andes and entire South American region. Find artifacts, scenery and everything else imaginable it is an incredible work.
