In 42 years, this is the first original copy of this book we have ever had. "Report of Explorations Across the Great Basin of the Territory of Utah For A Direct Wagon-Route From Camp Floyd to Genoa, in Carson Valley, in 1859" by Captain JH Simpson, Corps of Topographical Engineers, US Army. Government Printing Office, 1876. There is an incredible amount of information contained inside: descriptions of Simpson's route and trip, botany, astronomy, climate, railroad routes, geological report, paleontology, birds, and most importantly, a dictionary of the "languages of the Indians inhabiting Utah and the east slope of the Sierra Nevada!" This table lists approx. 50 English words along with translations in Ute, Shoshonee or Snake, Pi-Ute, and Washo. We believe this to be the first such comparative dictionary published. The volume also contains numerous plates and a very large map (30 x 50") of "Wagon Routes in Utah Territory," drawn by JP Mechlin. Map, as well as some of the other plates and pages have some separation and could use minor restoration. Binding is good. Green hardcovers. 12 x 9.5" 495 pages. Some toning and brittleness to the pages. A fascinating, original reference.
