Postmarked Fort Lyon C. T. May 24, 1863. Target cancel. This is 9 months after the Fort Lyon received a post office. Fort Lyon was named after Nathaniel Lyon, the first Union General killed in the Civil War. It was located on the north bank of the Arkansas River just west of Bent's New Fort. The Post Office was established at the fort in 1862, later in 1866 the river began to shift toward the fort and a new site was selected twenty miles upstream and occupied as Fort Lyon in June of 1867.
