Never seen by FH. This is the only copy we've ever offered. "A Revolution in Mining. Paul's Electric Dry Amalgamating Barrel Process. A System..." by Almarin B. Paul, 206 Front St. (Room 5), San Francisco. Printed by Spaulding & Barton, Book & Fancy Job Printers. 1871. 20pp. Brown wrappers. 8.5 x 5.5" Paul spent his career inventing various ways to mine gold and silver efficiently. Here he recounts the fruition of his "experiments for the perfecting of a cheaper system of thoroughly reducing ores, amalgamating flour gold, and the ridding of bullion of lead and copper when these metals are associated with gold and silver." This technique known as the Washoe Pan became the key to enabling the rich silver and gold deposits of the famous Comstock Lode to be harvested. OCLC and Rocq locate only the copy at UC-Berkeley. FIRST EDITION. OCLC 21608098 [1]. Rocq 10928 [1]. Not in Romaine, Winterthur, Eberstadt, Decker, Sabin, Cowan, Drury. Paul built one of the first mills in Nevada County and was associated with George Hearst in the conduct of that enterprise for many years. Paul was a key early figure on the Comstock. He erected the first mill there--a twenty-four stamp mill--to work the silver ores, which he reduced, at a uniform price to everyone, for thirty dollars per ton. He hired Duane Leroy Bliss to manage his quartz mill at Silver City and was also the organizer of the Imperial Consolidating Mining Company. In 1860 he invented what became known as the Washoe Pan process for working silver ores, whereby the time of work was reduced from thirty days to four hours. This method was used throughout the world in connection with silver mining. In 1865, having realized a fortune from his efforts in this direction, Mr. Paul sold his interests in mill and mines and embarked in the banking business at Gold Hill. He and D.L. Bliss became partners in the Gold Hill banking firm of Almarin B. Paul, Duane L. Bliss, and W.H. Baker which was purchased in 1865 by the Bank of California. In the year 1867 Mr. Paul sold commenced operations in Inyo County, California, in order to engage in the development of mines there. In 1868 he secured patents on new processes for amalgamating the precious metals.
