The North American Aviation first introduced the P-51 in 1942 with "P" for pursuit by the Army Air Corp. and the name "Mustang" by the RAF. The final version of this aircraft was the F-51D used late in 1944 and into the Korean War. It carried six Browning .50 cal. machine guns (BMGs). The plane painted here was the latest version with a supercharged Rolls Royce Merlin engine by David Charles McElroy in 1981 on hardboard, (This is an original work not a giclée). Very good condition. Overall size is 30 x 19 inches. David McElroy, 1933-2003, largely made sculptures along with painting anything mechanical and a graduate of the Art Center School of Design in Pasadena, Ca.
