Interesting letter from a man named Ransom. Ransom complains that the boys have probably given up on coming out here. It is just as well as they would be disappointed, One can't expect to come out here for 6 months and make a fortune. A person can make money, though, if he is industrious and follows on a branch of business [not mining]' All of his money has been reinvested back into his business. The fare from Sacto to San Francisco is 50c. The entire trip will probably cost between 5 to $8. There are "Opposition steamers" on the river that keeps the cost down.. He is now burning coal. A good blacksmith watches their shop when they are away. They hope to receive 700 to 800 bushels that will nearly last them the winter [Coal I assume]. Store coal is $65 per ton. Cala is a poor place to use law to fix grievances. No "justice in law" here. Excellent condition. City: Mormon Island State: California Date: December 12, 1854 hwac# 33388
