1) Fancy colored billhead from SR Buford of Virginia City on Fish Brothers Wagon Company of Racine, Wisconsin letter. Pictured is the "Monarch Wagon". Some tears on right. 2) Broadside for the "Mitchell Wagon." The Mitchell is Monarch. Best wagon in the world and can not be disputed. Buford's red branding is on the bottom. Henry Mitchell, a Scot who traveled with his family to Chicago in 1834, had apprenticed as a wheelwright in his native country. He began wagon making in Chicago, but, disliking the area, moved to Southport (Kenosha) in 1838 and continued his trade there. In 1854, having sold his Kenosha business, he began wagon making in Racine. "Go west, young man," in 1851 the byword for the country's westward settlement movement, became symbolized by the covered wagon. And Mitchell's "Monarchs of the Road," cross-country covered wagons which combined fine design with sturdy workmanship, eventually made the business the most successful in Wisconsin. Today the old factory has been turned into lofts for rent. City: Virginia City State: Montana, Date: Inventory# 41216
