Colt Factory Engraved by Cuno Helfricht, Single Action Army. Serial number 136851, sent to Senator Walter Tips of Austin, Texas and sent to Austin Texas, August 1,1891. Colt Letter States: ”Number of Same Type Guns in Shipment; 1". This gun was special order for Senator Tips who was in the mercantile business before becoming a Texas Senator. He enlisted April 6th,1862 into the Texas Field Battery of the Confederate Army, becoming 2nd Lieutenant by February 18th, 1865. He became a State Senator of Texas in 1892.

This Colt is some of Cuno Helfricht's finest work. Helfricht was one of the finest engravers of the 19th century and worked for Colt, as did his father, who was a stock maker for many decades. The Helfricht style was much like the L.D. Nimschke style, another famous engraver of the period, except Hehfricht employed a zigzag pattern as well as floral and scroll work. This beautiful one of a kind 5 ½" BARREL 45 has beautiful scroll and floral designed mixed with very small and tight punch dot shading between scrolls and very tasteful zigzag pattern around each flute on the cylinder and zigzag/dot pattern going the circumference of the cylinder as well as the length of the upper ejector rod housing. Of special note and extremely rare on Single Action Armys is the presence of the scroll and punch dot engraving on the HAMMER. This feature is EXTREMELY RARE and denotes a special order item, as does the gun per the Colt Factory Letter. The Factory letter also make note of the Firey Pearl Grips with Carved Ox Head Motif, another special order item rarely mentioned on Colt Historical letters. This fabulous and historical piece retains 98% of its original nickel finish with only small amounts missing at the muzzle. Overall a wonderful and beautiful work of art from the Colt factory Masters as well as a historical artifact from Texas history. Walter Tipps, 1848-1921. Founder of the Tips Co., founded in 1857 in New Braunfels,Texas. The company grew, expanding into Austin. While Tips had ventured unsuccessfully into ranching, his mercantile and engine company grew rapidly, rendering financial wealth. He ventured into politics, and was elected Senator in 1892, two years after he helped found the Austin National Bank. ID:37967
