Rare 1904 presidential campaign literature by Byron Andrews: "The Facts About The Candidate Theodore Roosevelt. What makes it rare, is its written in Danish, German & Hebrew, & the book is a unique 2 x 10 inches. The binding is slightly torn; there is slight damage to the lower cover. As early as 1899, Roosevelt’s support was so high amongst Jewish Republicans that they printed Hebrew flyers for his gubernatorial campaign alluding to the Rough Riders’ (which included many Jewish soldiers) victory over Spain in the Spanish-American War as revenge for the 1492 expulsion of Jews from Spain. Roosevelt was the first president to appoint a Jew to a Cabinet position (Oscar Solomon Straus, secretary of commerce & labor); a champion of Jewish rights at home & abroad, he was a vocal supporter of a Jewish homeland in Palestine; & a defender of Jews in the wake of the Kishinev pogroms of 1903. He even kept two Jewish menorahs on display at his 95-acre estate on the North Shore of Long Island, Sagamore Hill. In his autobiography, TR recounts that a German preacher had decided to go on an anti-Semitic crusade in New York to antagonize Jews there while he was police commissioner. Roosevelt assigned Jewish police officers to protect him, writing that the “proper thing to do was to make him ridiculous.”Although many editions of this book are for sale, in English, & in miniature, we haven't found one exactly like this one.
