Large moisture scale pan. Fairbanks Scales, Globe emblem at center. Porcelain, 12" diameter x 3/8" thick. Used in assay lab to measure moisture in ore samples. By the time of the Civil War, Fairbanks' scales were the best known American product in the world. Illinois Farmer, 1860: "It is with some business firms as it is with some individuals, that they stand alone in the walk or department of trade to which they direct their attention. It becomes a specialty with them, and by making it such, they carry it to the highest perfection of which it is capable. This is the case with Messrs. Fairbanks, the celebrated Scale Makers. They have devoted themselves entirely, and with such thorough science and skill, to the manufacture of weighing instruments, that they seem to have left nothing to be done by others."
