This is a beautifully scrimshawed fake walrus tusk made of resin at 15 in. The sailing vessel HMS Regulus was a British Barque fitted with 44 guns and launched in 1785. Later she was refitted for troop transport and later used to transport Negro families from the US to New Brunswick, Canada where they were promised jobs, housing, and land. Once there in New Brunswick they learned that they were cheated, and lied to; without jobs or housing. This scrimshawed reproduction is so prolific as to have a catalog number of 83b made by New Juratone S3 from the Kendall Whaling Museum (ref.: whalingmuseum.org) and known as "Fakeshaw". This is a beautiful scrimshaw but with a number of contradictions: The Captain James Hoad was really an officer in the Australian infantry who would likely not know larboard from starboard. He has a remarkable likeness to the likable Captain James Cook in his portraiture. His wife is also depicted but would be forbidden aboard a Naval vessel. The Barque is depicted with the stars and stripes; not likely on a British frigate. But it is a beautiful piece to hold. Please see photos for details and contradictions (there are more).
