Famous mostly NY and Pennsylvania mines. NY-issued 1865 Foster Iron Ore Mining with brown revenue stamp and foundry vignette. Issued 1877 Crown Point Iron with industrial vignette. Pennsylvania-Lycoming Valley Iron proof on backing, forge vignette. Strangly the backing has the impression of a freshly printed sheet of currency-see photo. Missouri-Issued 1887 Saint Louis Ore and Steel with glowing steel and workers vignette. New York has a long history with steel. In 1801 Levi Highbey and George Throop erected an iron works at Wilisboro Falls, NY, while Liberty Newman also erected iron works in Ticonderoga, NY. "In 1856, Englishman Henry Bessemer invented the Bessemer process, which allowed for mass production of steel from molten pig iron, reducing the cost of making steel by more than 50%.
