Lot of 3. 1) Excellent 1867 letter written from Aurora by C. Yager, who was a minister in Aurora. 4pp. Cornelius is writing to his brother James. The letter contains many personal details. Cornelius has just had his 56th birthday, and is feeling his age. He doesn't believe he has accomplished anything in his life. "When we learn to live we are ready to die." But the most fascinating part of the letter is when he gives his thoughts on the post Civil War South. "From the condition that I apprehend society is in, in all of the southern states, there is no earthly inducement that would influence me to become a citizen of any one of them. The governing race, that resided in those states, six years ago are powerless and destined to be trodden and and underfoot. The governments of those states has, or will pass into the hands of the Negroes with a few designing and unprincipled white men and in my judgment the most revolting conditions in society will exists that has ever been witnessed where man has been called civilized. My prayer to God is that he may avert the terrible doom that seems to me to be impending over those crushed states..." Folds, archival tape repairs. Comes with typed summary and bio of Yager. 10 x 7.5" 2) Very rare CDV from HK Gage, photographer located on Pine Street in Aurora. CDV is a portrait of Methodist Reverend Ira P. Hale, and is inscribed by him on the reverse. Hale was a pioneer of Aurora, and was assigned to Carson Valley in 1857. He was also an education superintendent in Aurora. 3) Bonbon spoon, silver plate, Found in the old Aurora, Nevada mining camp in the 1970s, this bonbon spoon was made by William A. Rogers of New York in the late 1800s. This Mr. Rogers was not related to the more famous Wm Rogers of Connecticut. The marking indicates it was medium grade silver plate. Five inches long with a round bowl two inches in diameter. Bonbon spoons were a specialized serving utensil used in Victorian times to elegantly present sweets, chocolates, and nuts at formal gatherings. These spoons with intricate pierced designs allowed confections to be handled without direct contact. In Victorian society dining was a highly ritualized affair; Bonbon spoons were passed around the table with a plate or bowl of sweet treats, allowing guests to serve themselves in a refined manner.
