The two earliest deSmet certificates from the David Shaddrick Homestake Collection. Certificate A25 issued to Margaret Myer on March 10-, 1880 for 100 shares (orange border), cancelled. And: Cert no. 38 to E.R. Graw for ten shares on March 10, 1880 (blue border), cancelled. The company was incorporated Jan. 23, 1878, thus these two certificates must be the second issue. It is unknown if any first issue exist.
George Hearst commented when he first went forth on this mine that it was the best mine he had ever seen. But by May, 1878 he came to the realization that the Father DeSmet "didn't hold a candle to the Homestake." It had a lot of exposed ore on the surface, but the underground was lacking, or so he thought. Hearst had paid $400,000 for the mine, and within seven months had no interest in keeping it.
More research is necessary to find out if the Hearst- Tevis - Haggin triumvirate kept the mine, a "piece" of the mine, or sold it out completely.
