Grant (1822 - 1885) was the 18th President of the United States (1869-1877) following his highly successful role as a war general in the second half of the Civil War. Under Grant, the Union Army defeated the Confederate military, ending the war and secession with Lee's surrender at Appomattox. President Grant is credited with eliminating the Ku Klux Klan and furthering the effort to protect African American voting and civil rights.  His reputation was damaged, however, by his support of corrupt appointees, and by the Panic of 1873 during his second term.  [Ref: Abe Books] "Grant's memoirs comprise one of the most valuable writings by a military commander in history" -- Eicher 492.
