May,, 23, 1765, autograph document signed in text, "Abigail Adams," one page, 2" x 7.5," Choice Fine. This is a receipt for wages received by Rachel Marsh, possibly a servant. This document was written by Abigail Adams, dated at Braintree, MA, and signed by Rachel Marsh. It reads in full: "Braintree May 23, 1765 - Received of Abigail Adams one pound six Shillings and eight pence Lawful Money for a Quarters Wages. I say received by me - Rachel Marsh." On the back is the docketing information: "Rachel Marsh's Rect." This receipt is in nice condition, with a few light age spots, clearly written, with Abigail's signature being nearly 2" in length. Also, an unsigned, half-length, engraved portrait of Abigail Adams, 7" x 5.5," in excellent condition aside from one tiny chip in the upper left corner. A rare and desirable Abigail Adams signature.
Abigail Adams (1744-1818), First Lady and wife of the second President John Adams, was the daughter of a Congregationalist minister. She was never formally schooled, but was an avid reader. She was a clever politician in her own right and was renown for her brilliance and outspokenness. [ 1765
