An outstanding suite of maps by the General Land Office showing the advancement of the federal surveys in concert with the rapid increase in population over the first half of the nineteenth century.
Florida was developed over time out of what's known as bottom land and swamps., Through history, it was a key location for sea travelers.
Robert Butler was the surveyor in 1837. The survey shows various land grants, land claims and only three towns, St Augustine, Tallahassee, and Fernandina. 9.5 x 24"
The 1848 map is 23 x 25" also shows no surveyor. This map is very detailed, using shading to indicate massive swamp land. It also shows significant riverways, lakes, land grants, and the current status of land surveying by township.
The 1850 map is spilt into thirds, rather than on a single sheet. It appears to be a more simplified version of the 1848 map - more of a "summary" of the survey progress.
The 1852 map is single sheet, 24 x 26.5", and shows much more advancement in survey and many more cities and place names. Only 4 years after the gold rush, the need for a better surveyed Florida was evident and is also so in the presentation of the data on this map.
