Rare American Flat mine. Storey Co., Nevada (printed at upper right). Inc. Dec. 1873. No. 275, issued for 1,000 shares to E. Fisher on Aug. 22nd, 1876 in San Francisco. Signed by president EW Leonard and secretary Lucien Herman. Not cancelled. Gold border, black print, oval mining vignette. Printed by AL Bancroft, SF. Folds, light wear. 5 x 9.5" The Florida was located in southern American Flat. It was originally called the Pony Express and was located in 1859. Work in the 1860s included a tunnel 500 ft. into the hill which encountered low-grade ore. The Pony Express Co. spent $100,000 in development but only yielded $20 in ore! In 1876, a shaft was sunk to 460 ft. A flood of water was encountered when they hit the ledge, but machinery was put into place.
