This is the book that helped rescue Samuel Clemens from bankruptcy. Published by The American Publishing Company of Hartford Conn. in 1897. 712 pages. First edition, first state with only one publisher and MDCCCXCVII listed on the title page. Thick octavo bound in blue cloth with gilt decoration and titles on spine, gilt decoration to front board with elephant illustration in the center. 1st printing, "11" signature mark on page 161. Clemen's account of his trip around the globe, complete with plate prints and narrative as only Clemens can tell it.
Boards are in very good shape, with minor bump damage. There is a binder separation problem with tissue, but fly pages are intact. Overall very good condition. Inscribed inside front cover on right, blank page in pencil, "Sam E. Tripp - January 29, 1898 Newburgh, Ny"
