This Riker box contains 18 items found at Fort Bowie, Arizona Territory and the Butterfield Overland Trail 1857-1861. This trail was the southern route for mail in the south-west. The ammunition is this group has a lengthy history. There is the .45-70 cartridge with the Martin primer system; a spike finial from a period helmet; a .405 cal. WCF WRA cartridge case that fits the model 1895 Winchester lever action rifle made popular by Teddy Roosevelt's African hunting trips; a .45-70 cartridge Benet primed marked 4/R/8E/F (April, rifle, 1878 April/Frankford arsenal); a .50-70 Benet primed cartridge; a shell fragment from the battle of Apache Springs 7-15-1862; a shell fragment with a fuse hole; a .56 caliber cartridge (possibly) for the Spencer rifle c. 1860's; a .50 cal. short round; a well worn horseshoe; a .45 Colt cartridge case, a size 14 wood screw 2 in. length; a 1/2in. X 16 flange nut; .44 cal. Russian Smith & Wesson revolver cartridge case. (The .44 cal. Russian and American never caught on with army soldiers and they much preferred the .45 Colt for superior knockdown power.); a "3" hat badge pin; a button marked "US Indian Service"; a .45 cal. rifle slug about 550 grain; and a friction primer pin that was lanyard pulled for firing a mountain howitzer cannon. The ammunition here represents about 50 years of firearms history. No international sales, additional postage fees apply for live round ammunition. Please see photo for details.
