Fort Point was fortified built in 1853 and a key defense during the Civil War should the Confederate ships have attacked the Pacific Coast. In August 1865, the Confederate raider CSS Shenandoah planned to attack San Francisco, but on the way to the harbor the captain learned that the war was over.
