A group of five books telling the tales of the harrowing trips and voyages made to Western America following the discovery of gold in Coloma, CA, in January, 1848. The collection includes:
1. "The German Emigrants or Frederick Wohlgemuth's Voyage to California," Dr. Dietrich, Leopold Wray, translator, limited edition, 1000 copies, republished for the California Centennial Celebration, 1949, James Ladd Delkin, Stanford University. Seven colorized illustrations and cover design reproduced from original, thought to have been published in Germany in 1852. 47 pp. 4.75" x 7.5". 2. "Incidents of a Voyage to California - 1849 - A diary of travel aboard the bark Hersilia, and in Sacramento, 1850," Errol Wayne Steven, editor, 1987. Illustrations. 44 pp. 6" x 9". Fine.
3. "A Forty-Niner Speaks, A chronological record of the observations and experiences of a New Yorker and his adventures in various mining localities in California, his return trip across Nicaragua, including several descriptions of the changes in San Francisco and other mining centers from March 1849 to January, 1851." Hiram Dwight Pierce, author and illustrations. Second edition, 1930. First published in October, 1930, limited edition, 100 copies, then reprinted the next month, as shown here. Paperback, 74 pp. 6.5" x 9". Very good.
4. "Fortunes are for the Few, Letters of a Forty-niner," Charles William Churchill, 1977, San Diego Historical Society. Illustrations. 136 pp. 6.25" x 9.5". Dust jacket, fine.
5. "Diary of Nelson Kingsley, a California Argonaut of 1849," Frederick J. Teggart, editor. 1914, Univ. of Calif. Berkeley. Vol. 3, No. 3, pages of the journal "covering the period from the 8th day of February 1849 to the 4th day of March 1851, shows the troubles and experiences of a 'Forty Niner'..." Paperback, 177 pp. 6.5" x 9.5". Minor wear edges of cover and pages, otherwise very good. California
