Fossett, Frank - COLORADO: HISTORICAL, DESCRIPTIVE AND STATISTICAL WORK ON THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN GOLD AND SILVER MINING REGION Denver Daily Tribune Steam Printing House 1876 Hardcover ; B&W Illustrations; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾"; 470 pages, ix, (7)pp. Fair with no dust jacket; A rare first edition, this copy has a tear to the cloth cover at the top of the spine, bends and rubbing with boards showing on corners, and some minor bubbling of the cover on the front, more on the back with slightly more loss of color. It is cracked away from the hinge inside with some damage to the title page and the page before the title page missing. A small brown stain is on the outside edge of the first four pages. At least two differing stocks of paper were used, with the first section of the book darker than the rest. First Edition; 1st A rich, compendium-style treatise on colorful Colorado. From the spectacular setting and first explorers to the rich mines and the towns that once flourished, all forgotten places illustrated in engraved images. Appendix showing names of public titles. Contains a great deal of detail regarding mining in Colorado, including details of mines and their operations. In addition to the many illustrations, and an appendix, there are 7 pages of advertisements including railroads and mining equipment, pharmacies, trains, and coaches, etc. The first edition is much rarer that the 1880s editions, though they added a bit.
