Brittle Stars are in the phylum Echinodermata in the class Ophiuroidea, and they are distinct from but closely related to the more familiar starfish. This fossil is likely from the Ordovician geologic era approximately 500 million years ago. The specimen has been painstakingly revealed by carefully sand-blasting away the sediment matrix and then applying a thin coat of white paint to add contrast to the fossil which has been painted in brownish-yellow. The approximately 9-inch-square slab is beautifully prepared for display and ready to be presented on a small easel or mounted in a shadow box frame. City: State: Date: Ordovician Era
