Fifty million years ago ancient Fossil Lake existed in what is now southwest Wyoming. Of its estimated 960 square miles, approximately 500 square miles of sediments remain. The unusual chemistry of Fossil Lake created conditions that prevented decay and scavenging, while alternating layers of limestone and organic matter. Fossil Lake sediments contain the world's most diverse and densely populated aquatic fossil assemblage. Since its discovery in the 1870s, more than 1,000,000 perfectly preserved fossil fish of at least 12 different species have been excavated. (These should be considered items for pick-up due to their fragile nature and heavy weight.) Fossil slab one is about 36" x 30" x 1/2". About 24 full fish (not perfect, but a full outline). 8 partial.
