John Dickinson, 1732-1808. Known as the "Penman of the Revolution" for his twelve Letters from a Farmer in Pennsylvania. Dickinson was one of the delegates from Pennsylvania to the First Continental Congress in 1774 and the Second Continental Congress in 1775 and 1776. One of the wealthiest men in the British American colonies, Dickinson served as president of Delaware (1781–1783) and president of Pennsylvania (1782–1785).

He was an accomplished debater and author of important papers opposing the American policy of the British government. He regarded the Declaration of Independence as premature and absented himself from Independence Hall when the vote was taken, and with a few other delegates refused to sign the Declaration. He entered the Revolutionary Army as a private and rose to the rank of Brigadier General.

In 1783 he founded Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, after whom it was named. He was a member of the convention that framed the Constitution. This document is signed in 2 places by John Dickinson, dated May 2, 1785. About 7.5x12.5", creased, ink stain on top and thru center. From the Hyatt Estate.
