Lot of four medallions made by the Heraldic Art Company of Cleveland Ohio. Commemorating the founding of St. Augustine (400th anniversary, 1565-1965); San Diego (1769-1969); Stephan Decatur; and the Transcontinental Railroad. These madals were struck from 1959 through 1978 in response to the U.S. Mint ending the commemorative half dollar program in 1954. Robert McNamara was the designer and producer. The medals were the size and weight of the U.S. half dollar, with reeded edges and exact weight (192 grains) but a higher fineness of silver: .925 as opposed to .900. Because of the close similarity with the half dollar, the U.S. Treasury told McNamera he would have to change the medals so they would not pass as half dollars in vending machines. His answer was to add 70 grains of sterling silver to the weight of each medal. He struck three different medals a year, creating 60 beautiful pieces over the twenty year period.
