Original Oil on Canvas. A portrait of F. J. Dvorak. 26 X 31". Nickel plaque "Presented to F.J. Dvorak by his friends May 28, 1892" Includes an original cabinet card photograph of Dvorak by Scholl, photographer, Chicago. Signed by artist, Jos. Klir in red at lower right. We believe this artist, Jos. Klir is the Czechoslovakian artist born between 1860-1867 famous for painting, "The Lost Bet", a view of a post-election parade with banner of Grover Cleveland, Adlai E. Stevenson, and Gov. John Peter Altgeld. The signatures appear to match, though not much information is available on Josef Klir.
Franz Dvorak was a major Impressionist Czech artist, 1862-1927. He traveled the world, coming to Philadelphia about 1888. He placed his works at various showings, including a Chicago art exhibition in 1890. He later moved back to Europe. This painting is a restored yet beautiful painting of the younger Dvorak when he was not quite 30 years old. This spectacular piece is from the James Mackie Collection of Grass Valley, California.
