Extremely RARE! Fraser & Chalmers: A COMPLETE SET OF FORTY-THREE CATALOGUES AND PAMPHLETS FROM FRASER & CHALMERS MINING MACHINERY FIRM Chicago. 1889-1892. Various paginations. This collection of catalogues comes from the library of Gen. Juan M. Mendez (1820-1894) who had a long career in Mexican military and political affairs, serving in the Mexican American War and in the fight against the French invasion of the 1860s. Mendez twice was governor of Puebla, and was interim President of Mexico from December 1876 to February 1877. An amazing collection of catalogues and pamphlets from the leading mining equipment firm, Fraser & Chalmers of Chicago. Founded in 1871, they merged with several other firms in the early 20th century to become the farm equipment giant, Allis-Chalmers. In 1889, Fraser & Chalmers had the largest shops in the United States devoted to the manufacture and tooling of mining equipment, with their headquarters taking up an entire block at Fulton and Union streets in Chicago. They supplied mining equipment across the United States and internationally, doing business in Canada, Europe, Asia, Mexico, and Central and South America. This collection of their catalogues provides a wealth of information and views on late 19th century mining techniques and equipment. Included are details and illustrations of drills, compressors, wheels, ore cars, hoisting machinery, pumps, steam stamps, designs, and specifications for entire milling operations, and much, much more. Contains a large foldout detailed drawing for a 60 Stamp Gold Mill that was built for the Montana Co. Ltd. The detailed application notes on the mining equipment usage would alone constitute an engineering text on mining and smelting techniques. Hundreds of detailed drawings of every component piece of equipment used in mining and smelting. Also given are lists of mining and smelting companies that Fraser & Chalmers has supplied specific equipment to, pamphlets they sponsored on mining innovations, printings of important articles including H.O. Hoffman's GOLD MILLING IN THE BLACK HILLS, published in 1889, and H.L. Bridgman's 1891 work on A NEW SYSTEM OF ORE-SAMPLING. Any 19th-century catalogues of Fraser & Chalmers are scarce - to find such a collection in one volume is a treasure. A wealth of mining information and illustrations, especially rich in specific information on mines and their equipment in the American West.
