Freeman & Co's New York & California Package Express, Successors to Adams & Co. Dateline New York, May 1st, 1856. Two cases sent from US Mint at Philadelphia to U.S. Assay Office in San Francisco on the Steamer Baltic. CE Burns Jr. for the proprietors. 5 x 8" Folds, toning, staining. The U.S. Assay Office operated in 1852 and 1853 to help standardize coinage for the California Gold Rush camps. The Assay department continued under the direction of the San Francisco Mint when it opened in 1854. In 1856, two soon-to-be famous Comstock assayers were working at the US Mint in their assay department, Conrad Wiegand and Leopold Kuh. Freeman & Co. succeeded Adams & Co. Express and bankers after the panic of 1855 forced it to cease operations. Freeman & Co. had gold on the SS Central America.
