A French Assignat from May 1793 was a paper bond issued during the French Revolution, intended to be backed by confiscated national lands, which were to be sold to the public in exchange for these notes. By 1793, the Assignat's value was rapidly depreciating, partly due to its large circulation, the economic instability of the war, and public distrust, leading the government to eventually try to stabilize the currency and later destroy the plates. 3 1/2 x 3 inches.
