(1) Ca. 1784: Balloon-shaped pendant. Two hollow brass shells with a loop added at the top. The balloon is lettered: MONTGOLIER. TWO HUMAN FIGURES ARE SHOWN IN THE GONDOLA along with the French flag and other banners. Rare and interesting period commemorative. Brass, 55mm from tip of loop to the base of the gondola. AU. (2) 1972: French medal commemorating the first manned balloon flight in 1783. The hot air and the fire powered hot air balloons are pictured on the obverse.The reverse text translates as “Struck in commemoration of the Journey of Joseph and Stephen Montgolfier on the 5th June, 1783, as a remembrance to posterity by order of Louis XVI. 1784.” The medal was originally struck in 1784 by the Paris Mint. The current example is dated 1972 on the edge hallmarks. Bronze, 51mm, Unc. (3) 1867: Gold-plated white metal medal commemorating Giffard’s tethered balloon at the 1867 Paris Exposition Universelle.
