This is a model 9 French cavalry pistol built in St. Etienne. The barrel is 8 in. long at about .69 cal. and the gun is 14 in. overall length. This gun is the predecessor to the Charleville design model 13. The lock-plate is marked " Manu. Imp. d St. Etienne" with a stamp "J" above. The barrel is marked "arrow over B" and stamped "1309, Mdl. 9". There are also inspector's marks of a crown over the letter P on the side-plate, nose-cap, trigger-guard bow, and trigger plate. AP is clearly stamped on the reverse lock-plate mortice. The lock has a noticeable brass mounted pan and the hammer is complete. The stock shows wear near the sear lever on the lock and indicates that the lock has been removed on occasion for lubrication or service. The entire gun has an even patination and is complete. These guns were built from 1801 until 1805 and replaced by the model 13 in 1806. This gun shows beautiful inspectors marks as well as assembly marks. Cavalry men were issued two of these guns for combat in France. Another great piece of firearm evolution in the United States. These guns may have been imported to the United States in time for the war of 1812 and may have seen service in the Civil War as well. No sales to New York City, New Jersey, California , and Hawaii.
