Fantastic! This is a California State Telegraph Company telegram, dateline Ft. Churchill, June 17th, 1864. Addressed to Governor Nye. Message reads: "Have but one gun here will have to use it here on fourth 4th July. C. McDermit." Nye had asked McDermit for use of the fort's cannon for the Carson City 4th celebration. This was McDermit's response! Nye ended up being the orator at the 4th of July celebration, and Orion Clemens, brother of Sam Clemens, called the day session of the second Territorial Constitutional Convention to order. Charles McDermit, namesake for Fort McDermit and McDermit, Nevada, was commander of the Military District of Nevada and was killed by Native Americans in a skirmish in the area in 1865. Fort Churchill, located in Lyon County, Nevada, was established by the U.S. Army in 1860 following the Pyramid Lake War, to protect westbound emigrants, the Pony Express, and telegraph lines from potential Native American attacks . Named after Sylvester Churchill, the fort served as a critical military outpost during the Civil War era, housing up to 600 troops at its peak . It was abandoned in 1869, and its adobe structures were left to deteriorate. In the 1930s, preservation efforts began, leading to its designation as a Nevada State Historic Park in 1957 and a National Historic Landmark in 1961.
