No. 193, issued for one share to George Lincoln "in the Funeral and Car Building, located within the original limits of the North Parish in Hingham." Dateline Hingham, Dec. 1824. Signed by treasurer J. Lincoln. Not cancelled.3 x 7.75" Pencil notations on reverse. This is an unusual stock sold by the church to raise money to buy and house a funeral hearse in 1824. The hearse was completed on Dec. 18, 1824 and first used for the burial Mrs. Martha S. Williams. The funeral car was used for 40 years. An interesting peak into the life of a small Massachusetts town at the beginning of the 19th century. [Ref: History of Hingham, 1893, pg. 378] The large Lincoln family was an early and important family in this town that came in the 1600s with the arrival of Samuel Lincoln. US president Abraham Lincoln is a descendant of the Hingham Lincolns! (He would have been 15 years old when this stock was issued.) We were not able to figure out the exact relationship between George and the US president.
