Great looking letterhead for one of the (the) most famous Nevada silversmiths. Garcia opened his silversmith shop in a corner in Elko in 1894. In 1899 he created his first catalogue. It proudly proclaimed to produce “Everything for the Vaquero.” His great success in Elko encouraged Garcia to draft a saddle for the World’s Fair in Chicago in 1904. “Using flawless leather, they dyed it black, carved in American Beauty roses, and then adorned it with gold, silver, and diamonds. It was truly a leather throne. Across the rear of the fork were several $20 gold pieces with likenesses of President Theodore Roosevelt and two governors of Nevada, John Sparks and William Nye. Other gold pieces were carved with the famous three fairy horses with diamonds set in their eyes. An engraved eagle was set into the back of the cantle. It was a leather masterpiece and it lived up to its creator's expectation by winning two gold medals. It was the best in world. A long list of famous people, including Theodore Roosevelt and a number of Nevada governors, rode in that saddle in various parades over the years until the saddle was permanently retired to the Nevada State Museum in Carson City. G. S. Garcia is probably the most notable silversmith, saddle maker, engraver, and leather carver in the American West! [J.M. Capriola online site] State: Nevada City: Elko HWAC#: 46882 Date: 1917
