Passenger receipt for G.W. Eastley for passage from New York to Aspinwall (and probably through to California) on the SS Central America, departing August 19, 1857 at New York. Eastley was traveling Second Cabin, Berth 240. Eastley is most probably George Washington Eastley, b1832 in New York, died 1913 at the Soldiers Home in Minnehaha, Minnesota. His obituary said he enlisted in the Mexican War as "a boy", and it is questionable if this is the same person, but other factors help some convincing. He stated in a 1901 article that he was a rifleman in the Mexican war, and scouted with Buffalo Bill. He mentioned joining the Civil War. He may have married and had a son of the same name born in 1858 in Martinsville, New York, but both soon disappear in data after 1865, indicating there may have been death in the family. We lose track of Eastley until 1866-1872, when three different trips from New York to England are noted on steamers, and he was simply listed as "a merchant." This is quite probably one of many men who briefly ventured to California to investigate the gold rush. If the same man (and we assume so), he then went inland to the Colorado region where he acted as a scout.
