This is a collection of letters written to Fred R. Merk by his brother, George W. Merk. George lived in Guerneville, California and took on many different jobs over the years. He traveled often for work, usually to Santa Rosa and San Francisco. Some of his trades discussed in these letters include being a general store owner, owning and selling timber, inventing a steam cooker, and attempting to be a quartz miner. Fred Merk lived in Twin Bridges, Montana and was involved in the quartz mining industry. He was a partial owner and superintendent of the Broadway Mill Company, a mining operation near Silver Star. These letters primarily contain information about the two brothers' professional endeavors and family matters. The collection contains approximately 180 letters written between 1874 and 1901. These letters can provide hours of interesting reading about two men who lived during the early development of the American West, specifically California and Montana. All letters are contained in a three-ring binder that is 12.25 x 11.5 x 3.5 inches. Good condition.
