Nice group for this historic match. This was the longest prize fight ever recorded going 42 rounds. The Great White Hope (Nelson) was disqualified when he landed yet another low blow. The Longest Fight took place on Labor Day, 1906, in Goldfield, Nevada. Gans and Nelson were matched in the first Fight of the Century promoted by Tex Rickard, who would later achieve greater fame by promoting Jack Dempsey's million-dollar fights. The Goldfield match under the blazing Nevada desert sun drew the largest gate in history at that time, with a purse of $30,000 and attendance over 8,000. Gans won in 42 rounds; the longest title boxing match ever! Many consider these two to be among the elite lightweight boxers and Gans won the day proving that a black man belonged in the ring with the greatest of white fighters. Not only was the fight a memorable one, William Gildea Gans (Joe's mother) sent a telegram urging him to "Bring back the bacon.
