First Gazetteer for New York! By Horatio Gates Spafford and published by H. C. Southwick. “CAREFULLY WRITTEN FROM ORIGINAL AND AUTHENTIC MATERIALS, ARRANGED ON A NEW PLAN, IN THREE PARTS: WITH AN ACCURATE MAP OF THE STATE.” The Gazetteer states “Buffalo is rapidly increasing in population, and contains about one hundred houses and stores.” By the end of 1813, Buffalo would contain only 4 buildings after the British killed Major General Riall lead 1,414 British soldiers, Canadian militia, and North American Indians on a raid into the United States and burned Buffalo to the ground during the war of 1812! Map has some condition issues and one 2-3” tear (see photograph). Pages have darkened with age, but writing is still clear. No cover. Spine decaying. Back cover is attached, but shows great wear. 334 pages with short appendix. [Rarity: v]City: New YorkCounty: State: NYDate:
