A large gemstone quality Verdite water buffalo with calf hand carved by Zimbabwe artist, Fanuel Masawa, signed on base with artist's mark on the top of the piece near the shoulder blades. No information is available online about this artist. Verdite is a rare, semi-precious green mineral found in Zimbabwe. These carvings are a traditional for of Shona art, valued for the stone's intrinsic beauty, featuring swirling patterns and different shades of green. This stunning sculpture weighs 16 pounds and measures 12 x 8 x 8 inches. Green felt glued to base. The African water buffalo, or Cape buffalo, is a common subject in Shona art. The animal is known for its formidable appearance and is often seen as a symbol of strength and power. The pieces in this sale were purchased at the Tucson Gem and Mineral show about 25 years ago. Today Verdite is considered a gemstone and referred to as "green gold" and sculptures made from the high quality stone seen here are extremely rare as stone this beautiful is becoming rarer and more valuable and would never be "wasted" on sculpture in todays' market, but strictly reserved for highly sought-after gemstone jewelry.
