In 1984, the Franklin Mint issued a set of 63 small Sterling (925) silver ingots, approximately 1/10th of a troy ounce each. The individual ingots each represent a particular world nation, and each ingot has a small gemstone cabochon corresponding to that country. For example, the Afghanistan ingot has a small cabochon of lapis lazuli, as one might expect. The obverse bears the cabochon next to a frosted relief image of the country outline, and the reverse lists the specific gravity and Mohs hardness number of the gemstone. This set includes 19 of the 63 ingots as follows: Afghanistan, lapis lazuli; Brazil, rose quartz; Brazil, Onyx; Colombia, Emerald; Denmark, Serpentine; India, Almandine Garnet; Iran, Turquoise; Italy, Coral; Japan, Pearl; New Zealand, Nephrite; Norway, Amber; People’s Republic of China, Jadeite; Spain, Aventurine; Sri Lanka, Sapphire; Switzerland, Smoky Quartz; Thailand, Ruby; USA, Amazonite; USSR, rhodonite; West Germany, Banded Agate. The set comes in a custom designed box, approx. 16-1/4 x 9 x 1-3/4 inches with molded indents inside for all 63 ingots of the set, all lined with a blue velveteen-like surface.
