Certificate No. 114, issued for 5 shares to secretary A.C. Morse inAurora on March 16, 1863. Signed by president William Meredith and secretary A.C. Morse. Not cancelled. Blue border and print with two allegorical vignettes (woman and eagle with flags). Printed by Towne & Bacon. 5.25x10.25". Folds, toning.

William Meredith was a lawyer, notary public, conveyancer and commissioner of deeds in Aurora. 'Captain' often proceeds his name. Morse was also an attorney and notary public. He was located in the Wingate Building on the west side of Silver Street. The mine is named after General Joseph Hooker, an American Civil War general for the Union; chiefly remembered for his decisive defeat by Confederate General Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Chancellorsville in 1863. He was also involved in quicksilver and silver mining in Sonoma County.
