General land office patent for Henry Stovy(?) of Zanesville, Ohio, 1837. Signed for President Martin Van Buren by his secretary (illegible). Also signed by Acting Recorder of the General Land Office Wilson. Folds, soiling, foxing. 10 x 16" Zanesville, Ohio, was founded in 1797 by pioneer settlers John McIntire and Ebenezer Zane, after whom the town was named, and it became an important early settlement in the Northwest Territory. Its location at the confluence of the Licking and Muskingum Rivers made it a key transportation hub, later enhanced by the construction of the National Road and Ohio and Erie Canal in the early 19th century. For a brief period from 1810 to 1812, Zanesville even served as the capital of Ohio before the seat of government was moved permanently to Columbus.
