Lot of 6 images of the former Civil War General and President's resting place in the borough of Manhattan. The collection includes 1). A 4.25”x 6.50” cabinet card illustrating Grant's early resting place, captioned “Gen. U.S. Grant’s Tomb, Riverside Park, N.Y. Copyright by F.A. Guzman, Flushing, N.Y. There is no date on the piece, but since the existing structure was not dedicated until 27 April 1897, it’s safe to assume the drawing is of the temporary structure.
2) & 3). Two color post cards, one a portrait of Grant, the other a view of the tomb post 1897. This card was a sample copy for the American Scenery Post Cards Co. advertising cards with scenes of Yellowstone, Niagra Falls and others 25 for 20c printed on the back. 4). A much larger cabinet card 10.50” x 4” with an illustration of Grant’s funeral with the cutline, “Depositing the coffin in the tomb and firing of volleys of musketry by the seventh and twenty-second regiments, N.G.S N.Y."
5). Photograph of people visiting the tomb circa 1900. 6). Photo of unknown man and woman, dressed in Sunday finery in an unknown location. Approximately 90,000 people from around the world donated over $600,000 towards the construction of Grant's Tomb. This was the largest public fundraising effort ever at that time. Designed by architect John Duncan, the granite and marble structure was completed in 1897 and remains the largest mausoleum in North America. Over one million people attended the parade and dedication ceremony, including Grant's widow Julia, who would join her husband there in1902 [nps.gov/gegr/historyculture].
Condition of the color post cards is very good as is the cabinet card. The larger cabinet card is separating because of the middle fold, but the image is very sharp.
The cabinet card is in very good condition, while the snapshots are age faded, but still very discernable. A nice record of a famous American monument.
